INTRODUCTION

This project came about at the initiative of the Cooperative Agricultural Producers Fafe - COFAFE as an attempt to reduce the abandonment of agricultural land and as a way of combating desertification constant that exists in the inland regions of the country, through rejuvenation of the agricultural business sector increasingly attracted by use of alternative crops and the promotion of agricultural sustainability.

OBJECTIVE

The goal is to develop the agricultural potential of the region, boosting the rural areas of county, in order to maximize the potential of the farms, with the guarantees of a row strategic, technically and economically profitable.

In this sense, this cooperative together with its 12 members, developed a project to production, processing and marketing of medicinal and aromatic plants in organic farming. The production plots occupy an area of about 20ha, and their productions will be sold to COFAFE who undertakes the transformation in their facilities and ensures the total production flow. This also minimizes Cooperative investment by producers since it is responsible for all processing, storage and packaging of all production, with the added advantage of providing other services such as: technical support, purchase of agricultural machinery for common use, freight, among others.

The cohesion between the various projects will allow to obtain size and strength in the market.

GAINS

Innovation, development and modernization of farms, through the production of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants in organic farming can meet the needs of a booming industry. The certification ensures that obtaining the products does not compromise the sustainability natural resources.

The cohesion inherent allows a stronger position in the market.

The production export provides a significant improvement in profitability of the whole project, because it allows to reach markets with higher purchasing power, the same markets that very demanding in terms of product quality and in terms of sustainability of production maintenance of natural resources.

Maintenance of natural resources passes through the rational use of water through the of irrigation systems in which its efficiency is preferred, the use of agricultural practices conserving soil (reducing the number of passages with agricultural machinery), protecting its structure, through the use of permanent crops, which promote the reduction of soil erosion, through the reduction of monoculture practices and consequent increased biodiversity induced by the multiculturalism practiced, which benefits the farms in terms of production, of the whole surrounding landscape and promotes maintenance or enhancement of environmental with inherent sustained appreciation of natural resources, landscape and rural heritage.

The project “COFAFEAromáticas”

This project consists of the installation of around 20ha production with the following species:

Sage (Salvia officinalis), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), peppermint (Mentha x piperita), “tutsan” (Hypericum androsaemum) and verbena (Aloysia tryphilla).

These plants will be produced by COFAFE and his associates in organic farming. After they will be processed and packaged on the premises of COFAFE and subsequently sold.

CONCLUSIONS

It is intended, with the implementation of this project to increase the profitability of farms that integrate, through the sale of goods with added value.

It will promote the entrepreneurship and increase the employability of the agricultural sector of the county.

The fact that this is a group project, in which we work to achieve common goals, allows achieving scale gains which, in turn, enable access to international markets.

INTRODUÇÃO

A Cooperativa dos Produtores Agrícolas de Fafe - COFAFE, CRL, preocupada com o abandono dos terrenos agrícolas e para combater a crescente desertificação das regiões mais interiores em geral, e Fafe particularmente, encontrou entre os seus cooperantes um grupo de jovens atraídos pela utilização de culturas alternativas e pela romoção da sustentabilidade agrícola. Com estes nasceu o projeto COFAFE – Aromáticas, que devolve ao trabalho da terra o entusiasmo de gente com formação e permite fomentar o rejuvenescimento do tecido empresarial agrícola.

OBJECTIVO

O objetivo é o desenvolvimento do potencial agrícola da Região, dinamizando os espaços rurais do concelho, visando a maximização do potencial das explorações, com as garantias de uma fileira estratégica, técnica e economicamente viável, logo rentável.

Nesse sentido, a COFAFE, em comunhão com 12 cooperantes, desenvolveu um projeto de produção, transformação e comercialização de plantas aromáticas e medicinais, em modo de produção biológico. A fileira é constituída por um conjunto de parcelas que ocupam uma área de cerca de 20ha, sendo as produções vendidas à COFAFE que procede à transformação nas suas instalações e garante o total escoamento da produção.

Esta Cooperativa minimiza ainda os investimentos dos produtores uma vez que é responsável por todos os processos de transformação, armazenamento e embalagem de toda a produção, com a vantagem acrescida de lhes poder fornecer apoio técnico, alfaias/máquinas para utilização comum e transporte de mercadorias, entre outros.

A coesão entre os vários projectos permite obter dimensão e força no mercado.

“MAIS-VALIAS”

A inovação, desenvolvimento e modernização das explorações agrícolas, através da produção de Plantas Aromáticas e Medicinais, no Modo de Produção Biológico permite suprir necessidades de um setor em franca expansão. A certificação biológica permite garantir que a obtenção dos produtos não compromete a sustentabilidade dos recursos naturais.

A coesão inerente à fileira permite um posicionamento mais forte no mercado.

A exportação da produção possibilita uma significativa melhoria da rentabilidade de toda a fileira, porque permite chegar a mercados com poder de compra mais elevado, mas também mais exigentes, quer em termos de qualidade dos produtos, quer em termos da sustentabilidade das produções e da manutenção dos recursos naturais.

A manutenção dos recursos naturais passa pela utilização racional da água através da utilização de sistemas de rega em que é privilegiada a sua eficiência. Igualmente, a utilização generalizada de práticas agrícolas orientadas para a conservação do solo, com redução do número de mobilizações, protegem a sua estrutura. Com a utilização de culturas permanentes promovemos a redução da erosão, pela diminuição de práticas monoculturais e consequentemente temos o aumento da biodiversidade, induzida pela multiplicidade cultural praticada. Estas práticas beneficiam as explorações, quer em termos produtivos, quer na envolvente paisagística, promovendo a manutenção ou melhoria da qualidade ambiental com a inerente valorização sustentada dos recursos naturais, paisagísticos e patrimoniais das zonas rurais.

O PROJETO COFAFE - Aromáticas

Este projeto consiste na instalação de cerca de 20ha de produção com as seguintes espécies:

Salva vulgar (Salvia officinalis), Cidreira (Melissa officinalis), Hortelã-pimenta (Mentha x piperita), Hipericão do Gerês (Hypericum androsaemum) e Limonete (Aloysia tryphilla).

Estas plantas serão produzidas pela COFAFE e pelos seus associados em Modo de Produção Biológico após colheita serão transformadas e embaladas nas instalações da COFAFE e posteriormente comercializadas.

CONCLUSÕES

Pretende-se, com a implementação deste projeto, aumentar a rentabilidade das explorações agrícolas que o integram, através da comercialização de bens com valor acrescentado.

Fomentar o empreendedorismo e o aumentar a empregabilidade do setor agrícola do concelho.

O facto deste ser um projeto de fileira, em que se trabalha para atingir objetivos comuns, permite obter ganhos de escala que, por sua vez, possibilitam a acesso aos mercados internacionais.
